Brazil – Wildlife of the Pantanal Led by Marius Coetzee

There’s a moment when the Pantanal unfurls before you—the mirrored expanse of wetlands, the shimmering river channels, the chorus of birdcalls and rustling marshes. On this recent ORYX Photo Tour led by Marius Coetzee, that moment blossomed into countless others, each more spellbinding than the last.

Into the World’s Greatest Wetland

The journey began in Cuiabá, from where we traversed the storied Transpantaneira road—crossing wooden bridges into a realm where jaguars glow like ancient spirits along riverbanks and capybaras drift like plumes of smoke. The Pantanal, praised by ORYX as South America’s premier wildlife spectacle, delivers everything from giant river otters to hyacinth macaws—and jaguars, the jewel in its crown.

Jaguars: The Mythic Icons of Pantanal

Thrill-packed days, our mornings and afternoons were consumed by boat expeditions—our boats slipping through channels in search of jaguar sightings. The sheer presence of these cats is guaranteed here—riverside giants whose power, stealth, and grace are otherworldly.

But the reality exceeded expectations. Guests marveled at family groups of giant otters, towering Brazilian tapirs, and bustling capybara herds—animals drawn to water’s edge as the dry-season waters recede.

The Rich Tapestry of Pantanal Wildlife

Beyond jaguars, the Pantanal overflows with biodiversity. Guests were dazzled by vibrant hyacinth macaws, towering jabirú storks, giant anteaters, Brazilian tapirs, and giant river otters weaving through shimmering water.

From the breeding grounds of pastel spoonbills and towering herons to capybaras grazing at dawn, to elusive ocelots prowling the margins and howler monkeys echoing through gallery forests—every moment felt like nature’s kaleidoscopic flourish.

Landscape as Canvas

Our floating home—a houseboat—was moored among hidden channels, offering sunrise coffees and days spent afloat amid lilies and caiman browses. Even the lodges felt alive with wildlife. Just steps from chalets, hyacinth macaws congregated in fruiting palms, and endemic birds flickered through sunrise shadows

A Photographer’s Journey: Learning and Connection

Each guest found themselves guided not just by Marius’s camera wisdom, but by the intimacy of shared wonder. Many saw more than 15 jaguars, captured playful otters, and framed breathtaking bird portraits. Conversations around images, tips on shutter speed or composition—these wove into a collective rhythm of discovery.

Moments Etched in Memory

  • A jaguar lounging on a fallen tree branch at dawn—majestic and mesmerizing.
  • Otter families dancing in river eddies, playful and fierce.
  • Hyacinth macaws, brilliant blue against sunlit palms.
  • Toco toucans and jabirú storks tracing arcs through misty wetlands.
  • Capybara herds drifting through reeds, mirrored by sky.
