ORYX Photo Tours is proud to present a tour designed to take you to one of Africa’s premier areas for photographing predators Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park. The Lower Zambezi National Park is simply enchanting. The aesthetics are in part from the 120km of Zambezi River front, the concentration of game along the valley floor, the backdrop of the magnificent Zambezi Escarpment, all held within the old and ethereal-looking Winterthorn forests. Game drives are hugely successful for wildlife photographers, allowing you to get closer to our intended subjects and cover greater distances. The Lower Zambezi National Park has a modest road network and allows off-road driving for key sightings. The eastern sector is generally shared by few other vehicles due to its distance from most of the camps which are based closer to the western sector. This allows us to maximize game viewing opportunities whilst preserving the different habitats, and leaving great expanses for walking.

Why this Photo Tour is for You

Destination Allure

The Lower Zambezi National Park is simply enchanting. The aesthetics are in part from the 120km of Zambezi River front, the concentration of game along the valley floor, the backdrop of the magnificent Zambezi Escarpment, all held within the old and ethereal-looking Winterthorn forests.

Month of Travel

Our Photo Tour takes place at the start of spring, which is one of the best months to photograph wildlife. As the seasons shift from winter to spring, temperatures rise, making water sources even more scarce and the dense bush is still thinned out. This makes wildlife viewing and photography easier as wildlife congregate around the larger water sources.

Photographic Subjects

Be prepared to see Elephant, Buffalo, Impala, Lion, Leopard and Wild dogs.

Guided Experience

Local knowledge of the region and its wildlife is key to crafting the ultimate photography tour experience. Combined with the photographic expertise of your ORYX Photo Tour Leader, and you are in for an adventure that will further fuel your excitement for photography and the destination.

Be prepared to be captivated by the ancient and enchanting beauty of the Lower Zambezi’s Winterthorn Forest and its inhabitants!   High densities of elephant gather on the valley floor as the dry season commences, along with large herds of buffalo and impala. In attendance are all of the large predators one might expect, with lion, leopard and wild dog very well represented here. Days 6 to 8: Lower Zambezi National Park

The Lower Zambezi National Park, a 4,092 square kilometer sanctuary, stretches along 120 kilometers of the Zambezi River in southeastern Zambia. Bordering Zimbabwe's Mana Pools National Park, this pristine wilderness is characterized by a rugged northern escarpment and the life-giving river with its islands, lagoons, and floodplains.   This ecological haven hosts about 50 mammal species and 400 bird species, thriving amidst diverse flora. As a relatively new tourism destination, the park enjoys strong protection from both the Zambian government and local tour operators, ensuring its unspoiled nature.

My recent private photo safari to the lower Zambezi National Park with ORYX Photo tours, was nothing less than incredible!

What an amazing destination. Game viewing extends from options to canoe and explore the river via boat, as well as the conventional land cruiser. I even got try my hand at fishing for a tiger fish!

Photographic opportunities were quite unique with the inlets from the Zambezi creating small oases in the bush for animals to drinks and feed at. The expanse of the river also provides beautiful photographic opportunities of hippos and crocodile not to mention incredible sunsets and early morning light! The winter thorn groves capture light in a way that makes for romantic bush scenes. Wildlife is abundant and pristine.

All that’s left to say is I am counting the days until I can return.

ORYX managed all my trip requirements and took the stress of travel out of my trip. I am already rebooked on another tour!
